Uses
Gefinix (gefitinib) 250mg tablet treats lung cancer by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells. It achieves this by blocking a protein called tyrosine kinase.
How to Use Gefitinib 250 mg Tablet (Antineoplastic – Protein-Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors)
- Read Instructions: Review the Patient Information Leaflet from your pharmacist before starting gefitinib and each time you get a refill. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Dosage: Take gefitinib by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Usually, this is once daily.
- Swallowing Tablets: If you have trouble swallowing the tablet, dissolve it in 4 to 8 ounces (120 to 240 milliliters) of water. Stir well for 15 minutes, then drink the entire mixture immediately. Rinse the glass with another 4 to 8 ounces (120 to 240 milliliters) of water and drink the rinse to ensure you consume the full dose.
- Avoid Interactions: Medications that reduce or block stomach acid (like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers, or antacids) can decrease gefitinib absorption and effectiveness. If using PPIs (e.g., omeprazole, lansoprazole), take gefitinib at least 12 hours before or 12 hours after the PPI. For antacids or H2 blockers (e.g., famotidine, ranitidine), take them at least 6 hours before or after gefitinib.
- Dosage Adjustment: Your dose depends on your medical condition, treatment response, lab test results, and other medications you’re taking. Inform your doctor and pharmacist of all products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
- Consistency: Take this medication regularly at the same time each day to maximize its benefits.
- Avoid Overuse: Do not increase your dose or use this medication more often or for longer than prescribed, as this does not improve your condition faster and may increase the risk of side effects.
