What is Twynsta?
Twynsta is a prescription medication that combines two active ingredients: telmisartan and amlodipine. Available in tablet form, Twynsta comes in various strengths: 40 mg telmisartan/10 mg amlodipine, 40 mg telmisartan/5 mg amlodipine, 80 mg telmisartan/10 mg amlodipine, and 80 mg telmisartan/5 mg amlodipine.
Product Description
Twynsta is for the treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults. Essential hypertension means that the high blood pressure has no identifiable cause. Twynsta is effective in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately managed with amlodipine alone. It can also replace separate treatments of telmisartan and amlodipine when patients are already taking both medications in tablet form.
Directions
Twynsta is taken orally as one tablet once daily. The maximum dose is one tablet of the highest strength (80/10 mg) per day. In some cases, a direct switch to Twynsta may be appropriate. The dosage of Twynsta will depend on the previous doses of telmisartan and amlodipine the patient was taking.
How does Twynsta work?
Twynsta lowers blood pressure through the combined actions of telmisartan and amlodipine. Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that blocks the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. By preventing this action, telmisartan helps blood vessels relax and widen. Amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, inhibits the flow of calcium ions into the cells of blood vessel walls, preventing contraction and promoting relaxation of the vessels. This dual mechanism effectively reduces blood pressure and lowers the risk of complications such as strokes.
