Description
Rotateq (rotavirus ) vaccine 2ml is an oral vaccine designed to prevent rotavirus infections in children, which can lead to severe symptoms like fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. These symptoms can cause dehydration, hospitalization, and, in some cases, death. While RotaTeq offers significant protection, it may not fully prevent the infection in all children, and it will not be effective if your child has already contracted the virus.
Unlike traditional shots, RotaTeq is administered orally in three doses. The first dose is given when your child is between 6 to 12 weeks old, the second dose follows 4 to 10 weeks later, and the third dose is administered within 4 to 10 weeks of the second dose. Your child must receive the third dose by the time they are 32 weeks old.
Your child should not receive RotaTeq if:
- They experienced an allergic reaction after a previous dose of the vaccine.
- They are allergic to any of the vaccine’s ingredients.
- They have Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease (SCID).
- They have a history of intussusception, a condition where part of the intestine becomes blocked.
Consult Your Doctor If Your Child:
- Has a fever or illness (mild colds are not a reason to delay the vaccine).
- Is vomiting or has diarrhea.
- Is not gaining weight or growing as expected.
- Has a blood disorder or any type of cancer.
- Has a weakened immune system due to conditions like HIV/AIDS or is undergoing treatment that weakens the immune system, such as steroids.
- Has had a blood transfusion or blood products within the past 42 days.
- Was born with gastrointestinal issues, has had a blockage, or has undergone abdominal surgery.
- Regularly comes into close contact with someone who has a weakened immune system, such as a family member with cancer or someone on immunosuppressive medication.
