Atovaquone/Proguanil Tablets
– Strength: 250mg atovaquone / 100mg proguanil
Malaria Prophylaxis
DOSAGE:250 mg atovaquone / 100 mg proguanil (1 tablet) orally once daily, initiated 1-2 days before travel to malaria-endemic area, and continued until 7 days after returning
Treatment
– Dosage: 1 g atovaquone / 400 mg proguanil (4 tablets) orally once daily for 3 days
Dosing Considerations
– If vomiting occurs within 1 hour of dose, administer a repeat dose
– Geriatric patients may require cautious dose selection due to reduced hepatic/renal/cardiac function and increased exposure to cycloguanil
Dosing Modifications
– Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) <30 mL/min: Prophylactic use not recommended; treatment only if benefits outweigh risks
– CrCl 30-80 mL/min: No dosage adjustments required
Administration
– Take daily at the same time with food or a milky drink
– For children with swallowing difficulties, tablets may be crushed and mixed with condensed milk just before administration
